Cartoonist Pastis has no qualms about incorporating characters from other comic strips into his own shared universe. In "Peanuts," Charlie Brown has an unrequited yearning for "The Little Red-haired Girl." Now, In "Pearls," Rat has an unrequited yearning for "the girl from the Xmas tree lot" (a redhead). Keeping faith with Charlie Brown's unfulfilled quest, Rat is going to wear clown shoes on his first date with the red-haired girl from the tree lot. If this is (fair & balanced) exegesis, so be it.

[Stephan Pastis is a lawyer-turned-cartoonist who interacts with his own characters within the comic strip from time to time. Big mistake, because he never wins a single debate or argument with any of the characters.]
