Today's 'toon by Tom Tomorrow has a backstory and it appears that Sparky the Wonder Penguin has gone to the Hot Place after being gunned down by a terrorist. But wait! Tom Tomorrow borrows a plot twist from "Newhart" a TV comedy series starring Bob Newhart.(1982-1990). In the final episode, the last scene (18:58) shows Bob Newhart as if his earlier show, "The Bob Newhart Show" (1972-1978) had continued to 1990 and the entire series of "Newhart" had only been a very bad dream. Ditto for Sparky the Wonder Penguin as he had only dreamed of being gunned down by a terrorist and ending up in the Hot Place. In Sparky's "dream," he is in colloquy with Satan while bats flitter about the fiery depths. But, wait! One of the bats looks like The Trickster! Another looks like The Dickster! And a third bat looks like the Blonde Beach from Connecticut! If this is (fair & balanced) Faux Eschatology, so be it.

[Dan Perkins is an editorial cartoonist better known by the pen name "Tom Tomorrow". His weekly comic strip, "This Modern World," which comments on current events from a strong liberal perspective, appears regularly in approximately 150 papers across the U.S., as well as on Daily Kos. The strip debuted in 1990 in SF Weekly. Perkins, a long time resident of Brooklyn, New York, currently lives in Connecticut. He received the Robert F. Kennedy Award for Excellence in Journalism in both 1998 and 2002. When he is not working on projects related to his comic strip, Perkins writes a daily political blog, also entitled "This Modern World," which he began in December 2001. More recently, Dan Perkins, pen name Tom Tomorrow, was named the winner of the 2013 Herblock Prize for editorial cartooning. Even more recently, Dan Perkins was a runner-up for the 2015 Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Cartooning.]
