The email bearing today's TMW 'toon also contained editorial remarks from Tom Tomorrow (Dan Perkins):
Well, we’re getting down to the wire. I basically have one more cartoon to go before election day. Technically I have two, but the second one will be the always problematic pre-election-deadline, post-election-publication cartoon — this happens every four years and I have various ways of getting around it, basically by acknowledging the problem I face as a cartoonist and riffing on it.
And then the drawing and design begins — my favorite part, as it’s just intuitive and visual and doesn’t take as much focused concentration as writing. Because I use a lot of stock characters, like my two MAGA guys, I don’t tend to plan it out much ahead of time — it’s more a matter of seeing what space I have leftover after the text is in place, and thinking about the best use of it. Though even at that, I tend to do a lot of tweaking — that’s an old drawing of Steve Bannon, for instance, but I finally got around to adding that weird little real-life detail, the fact that he wears two layers of collared shirts.
The final panel on this one took me *forever* to get right — at first I was trying to draw the contrast between the two candidates without mentioning either of them by name, but I’ve been doing this long enough to know that right wing trolls would say, “the corrupt, lying, incompetent buffoon — you mean JOE BIDEN hahahaha!” So I had to mention the two of them by name, which ultimately worked much better....
So I finally decided to upgrade my website, which has basically been sitting abandoned for the past three years. It was running together on patched-together html dating back twenty years, and was a total mess — fortunately there are templates which make it pretty easy to do these things now. My goal was to keep it simple and clean and mobile-friendly — I hear that’s big with the kids today. My next project is to see if I can figure how to have a Sparky’s List member’s exclusive area somehow, but that’s going to require figuring out password management software and hopefully not turning the entire website into a gated community by mistake. Anyway, check it out: www.thismodernworld.com!
Thanks as always for your support.
Be safe and be well,
Dan/Tom
