Vietnam Redux?

Gulf of Tonkin. Iraq's purchase of uranium from Niger. 1-year tours of duty. Light at the end of the tunnel. Love it or leave it. Does anyone else have a feeling of déjà vu all over again? Now, the all-VOLUNTEER Third Infantry Division wants to be rotated out. The new U. S. commander in the Middle East—General John P. Abizaid—has ventured that one-year tours may be necessary in the occupation of Iraq. William Westmoreland? I am growing more frightened with each passing day.




A Look at U.S. Daily Casualties in Iraq

As of Wednesday, July 16, 227 U.S. soldiers have died since the beginning of military operations in Iraq (news - web sites), according to the Defense Department. The British government has reported 42 casualties.

On or since May 1, when President Bush (news - web sites) declared that major combat operations in Iraq had ended, 85 U.S. soldiers have died in Iraq, according to the Pentagon (news - web sites).

Here is information from the U.S. military on the latest U.S. casualties.

—One American soldier was killed Wednesday in a rocket-propelled grenade attack on a supply convoy west of Baghdad near the Abu Ghraib prison.

—A U.S. Marine died in the southern city of Hillah on Wednesday when he fell from the roof of a building he was guarding.

Neither American was identified pending notification of kin.
