In December 1941, the United States Found Itself In A Two-Front War With Germany And Japan and Seventy-Nine Years Later, The United States Faces A Dual Threat From Treason In The White House And The COVID-19 Pandemic

Along with today's "TMW" 'toon, the email brought this message from the 'toonist:

It’s strange to realize I only have six more cartoons til the end of the Trump presidency, assuming the case of Batshit Crazy v. The United States of America doesn’t somehow advance to the Supreme Court and the justices decide to overturn the election just for the hell of it, but that doesn’t seem overly likely at this point. This may or may not be the last appearance of Donald J. Trump as the world’s only President-Detective. Trump will remain on the public stage — he’s even hinting at holding a rally/campaign announcement at the same time as Biden’s inauguration, which would be perfectly in character for the world’s biggest narcissistic asshole. The post Trump presidency is going to present its own challenges for all of us who write about these things in public. I *am* inclined towards ignoring him when possible, but he’s still going to be a significant force in conservative politics moving forward. Put it this way: in the nineties, people told me to ignore Rush Limbaugh, Fox News, etc., because I was just “giving them attention,” or that they were too easy of targets. I disagreed, I felt that they were incredibly important data points regarding the direction conservatism was taking the country. Given where we ended up, I think I was pretty clearly correct about this. Trust my instincts! If I write about Trump in the post-presidency, it’s not because I miss drawing his ugly orange face, it’s because I see something happening that I think people need to pay attention to.

That said, I fervently hope there’s less reason to pay attention to him soon.

Pence is said to be distancing himself from the lunacy of Trump’s ongoing misinformation campaign, which is why I have him sneaking out the door in the background. And yes, people are going to respond to this one with “it’s not even satire! It’s just what’s happening!” Because sometimes people miss the point of what I do — pointing out what’s happening, albeit in as entertaining a way as I can manage. But both of the conspiracy theories in the fourth and fifth panels are real, not things that I made up. One of the other small running jokes I’ve had going for the past four years is that Trump rarely refers to anyone by name — partly because I believe that he’s definitely cognitively impaired in some way, but also as a way of pointing out his endless narcissism — I’m trying to portray him as someone so self-involved, it’s not worth the trouble of knowing anyone’s name. On a similar note, the reason he won’t commit to giving his own daughter a pardon in the final panel is that he’s an asshole who likes to keep everyone around him guessing and off-balance.

And so the countdown continues.…

Be safe and be well,

Dan/Tom

Tom Tomorrow (Dan Perkins) echos this blogger's assessment at the end of last week that The Loser aka The *ILK/WPE (*Impeached But Not Removed) Lyin' King/Worst President Ever was both Cognitively Impaired [PDF] and driven by a Borderline Personality Disorder in his senseless attempt to reverse the electoral verdict that was rendered on November 3-4, 2020. If this is a (fair & balanced) description of national emergencies — both political and medical, — so be it. And, as long as the post-election nightmare of election challenges continue...
