Trivial Problems Pale When Bigger Problems Await

Today's 'toon was accompanied by the following message from Tom/Dan:

I don't have much to add to this one, except to say: it's okay to propose aspirational ideas! They had no idea how, "exactly," to get to the moon when JFK proposed the idea — and it took the rest of the decade to figure it out. And in the end, they did it. America has become a country in which people are afraid to dream big — at least, when it comes to issues like health care and, you know, saving the planet from becoming unlivable. The suggestion that America needs a high speed rail system drew much criticism on Twitter, from people who, I don't know, don't think a thing that works in many other countries could work here? People are weird. I guess we should all just listen to the sensible thinkers who tell us none of it is practical, and kiss our future — and that of our children — goodbye?

Dan/Tom

The current political atmosphere is foaming with competing responses to national and international problems. In the midst of all this chatter, the world is going to hell (if such a place exists) in a handbasket. Seas warming, storms becoming super-storms, and the magnetic North Pole is wandering eastward to the detriment of planetary stability, While the media chatters about matters that are trivial if the earth goes off its rocker (axis). If this is a (fair & balanced) description of a real problem, so be it.
