With today's 'toon, Tom/Dan wrote:
This cartoon [copyright 2017] has actually been sitting in my evergreen file for awhile. It was originally inspired by some amalgamation of David Brooks, about whom I have written a fair amount over the years, and by the infamous climate change denialism of his more recently-added colleague, Bret Stephens. But recent controversies, including running a piece by discredited gun-statistics manipulator John Lott, a pro-mercenary piece by Blackwater founder Erik Prince (publisher A.G. Sulzberger compared publishing that piece to publishing something by Bernie Sanders, because of course he did)... as well as the utter tone-deafness of staff editor Bari Weiss, who recently commented on Twitter, in reference to Olympic figure skater and American citizen Mirai Nagasu, “immigrants: they get the job done.” (She doubled down after being roundly criticized, claiming that she meant Nagasu’s *parents.*) And then there was the fiasco of Quinn Norton, who was hired and fired literally within hours after her tweets defending her friendship with literal Nazis were pointed out. Op-ed editor James Bennet is notoriously controversial in-house as well, as detailed here and here.
With all that going on, as well as a curtailed work week (due to some logistical complications arising from my new life in a liminal space), it seemed like a good week to run this one.
Until next week,
Dan
If this is a (fair & balanced) demonstration of the current corruption of "Facts" and "Factual," so be it.
