Calvin Trillin is the poet-in-residence of this blog. However, that said, a better version of today's poem would be:
We do respect your point of view.
We'll be glad to see the back of you.
Secession brings to mind yesterday's viewing of "Lincoln." In the final weeks of the war, the POTUS 16 answered the Rebel Peace Commissioners' demand that if the Rebel states surrendered they would be allowed to vote against ratification of the 13th Amendment. Ol' Abe answered them by sending Grant into Richmond and burning The River City to the ground. Finally, the script leaned too heavily on Team of Rivals by Doris Kearns Plagiarist. If this is a (fair & balanced) final verdict on the treasonous doctrine of secession (whether in 1860-1861 or 2012), so be it.
