Hey all,
So the family matter I was dealing with has mostly been taken care of; I took a week and went back to Iowa and somehow managed to get everything done that needed doing, and still made it back in time for my kid’s school play. And last week was a mostly normal workweek for a change. This cartoon is sort of a sequel to one from a couple of years ago about “Maga-Vision Spex,” which itself was a follow up to an old recurrent riff about “Red State Spex.” Which itself was a play on the old “X-Ray Spex” from the back of comic books, which purported to let you see through women’s clothing, though of course did not. As I was working on this one I realized that it (a) it was fundamentally a VR joke now, and (b) nobody under the age of 100 probably remembers the old X Ray Spex ads anyway. So I have upgraded the concept, though I kept the wacky spiral eyes because they look good visually. The one joke in here that might fly by people who don’t spend all day on Twitter is the bit at the end about Sylvester Stallone — that’s a reference to a meme that Trump tweeted with his face photoshopped onto Rocky’s body. When the Washington Post referred to it as a “doctored” photo, the Trump campaign responded that the Post had no evidence of this. Because we live in the weirdest and dumbest timeline.
Strange to think that I’ve got three more cartoons to go this decade (and due to early holiday publishing schedules, at least one of those is likely to be some sort of evergreen). Here’s hoping that the 2020s are better than the last few years of the teens.
Until next time,
Dan/Tom
So now, you know where things stand in "This Modern World." As this blog post is written, The LK (Lyin' King) travels to London on a mission for his handler in Moscow tp damage the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) as much as possible because NATO targets Russia as a probable adversary in World War III. The anti-NATO campaign was floated early on by The LK on the grounds of inadequate funding of NATO by Britanin, France, Germany, and yada yada yada. On top of that, The LK appointed an idiot to serve as US Ambassador to NATO as a second blow to that anti-Russian alliance. And the Lamestream Media reports this treasonous activity without comment about the anti-NATO stance forwarded by The LK as US foreign policy. The talking heads on US news shows ought to wear MADA-Vision Goggles as they look at the camera with the red light. If this is a (fair & balanced) imitation of Vidkun Quisling, so be it.
