Today, Sparky The Wonder Penguin Becomes A Time-Traveler

In the email that brought today's "This Modern World" 'toon, Tom Tomorrow/Dan Perkins also wrote:

This was inspired by a random recollection of how terrible the summer of 2014 seemed at the time. Ebola was rampaging in West Africa, the protests in Ferguson were underway, and Robin Williams had just taken his own life. It felt like a moment of intense anxiety, though these days we would basically call it “Tuesday.”

It was a complicated week here in Tomorrowland. I very nearly signed a lease on a new apartment, until my current landlord offered a rent reduction if I'd stay. And then the potential new landlord tried to lure me back with a drop in *his* rent. (I ultimately decided to stay in place, for now.) I've scoffed at the "New York is dying" pieces as much as anyone, but this is... not New York as I understand it. I do wonder what the next version of this city is going to be like, in six months or a year. In any case, I'm sticking it out for the time being.

Be safe, be well.

Dan/Tom

Actually, this is another chapter for the traditional Chinese -blessing- curse that is an ironic view of difficult times. It is safe to say that 2020 has been difficult and the chattering heads on TV news shows seem to agree that we are now living in the "New Normal." And on that ghastly note, there is a (fair & balanced) instinct to "soldier on."
