Flyers distributed at the Texas Independence Day Parade by the Kinky Friedman for Governor Committee; the die is cast!
Today, at the Texas Independence Day Parade in downtown Austin, approximately three-dozen supporters of Richard (Kinky) Friedman for Governor 2006 assembled at the corner of 7th & Congress. The Chinese adage A journey of great distance begins with the first step came true on March 5, 2005. The Kinkster will appear in person at a book signing (his last mystery novel Ten Little New Yorkers) at the Barnes & Noble store in the Arboretum on Tuesday evening, March 8, 2005, at 7:00 PM. Sam Houston in 1859, the Kinkster in 2006! If this is (fair & balanced) audacity, so be it.

Mexican Army captures San Antonio; Republic of Texas totters
On March 5, 1842, Mexican general Ráfael Vásquez, with 700 soldiers, occupied San Antonio. Unable to raise an army in time to resist this invasion, the Texans surrendered and evacuated the town without a fight. Vásquez raised the Mexican flag over the town, and declared Mexican laws in effect. On March 9 the Mexican army abandoned San Antonio and began to withdraw to Mexico. The incident was part of a series of raids and counter-raids in 1842 as Mexico sought to recover Texas and the Texans fought to maintain their independence.
