In today's 'toon, Sparky the Wonder Penguin (wearing his trademark Inuit-style googles to ward off bull$hit-blindness) is in colloquy with Bob (surname unknown), an imaginary mid-manager of TMW, Inc (an imaginary media company), about the day's drama. Tom/Dan added the following comments:
I haven’t done one of these meta “behind the scenes” cartoons in awhile. The middle-aged character used to be named “Bob Friendly,” though now that I also have an “Officer Friendly” who shows up from time to time, I may have to rename him {Bob Middie?]. He’s sort of the middle-management character at TMW Inc., always trying to keep everyone in line. Sparky, as always, is a stand-in for me, but don’t worry, I’m not really considering switching careers. Though it would be pretty fun to drive a Wienermobile across the country.
The first draft of this cartoon was a conversation between the penguin and a Tom Tomorrow character, but I haven’t drawn myself into the strip in a long time, and after some thought, decided it worked better with the middle-management guy, whatever his name may turn out to be now. Of course, the implication here is that Sparky is the one actually writing the cartoons, so… probably better not to think about it too much.
Nursing a mild cold at the moment, so I stayed in last night and watched "Infinity War" again, and I have to say, the most brilliant thing in that movie is teenage Groot wandering around staring at his handheld videogame the entire time. Those of you with teens who rarely look up from their phones will know what I mean.
Dan/Tom
While Tom/Dan offers us a cartoon about nothing, the real world gives us the presidency about nothing... unless you count Narcissistic Personality gratification as something (or anything). If this is a (fair & balanced portrayal of a meaningless future, so be it.
