Two, Four Six, Eight! Time To Re-Brettonate?

Ol' Marcy Shaffer has coined a neologism in these turbulent financial times: "Re-Brettonate." In the uncertain last days of WWII, 730 delegates from all 44 Allied nations met in Bretton Woods, NH during the first three weeks of July 1944. Those agreements held until The Trickster gave the world the Nixon Shock in 1971. Forty years later, we may be in for another shock, but it will be spoken in Mandarin. If this is (fair & balanced) economic reality, so be it.

A Parody Of "The Holly And The Ivy" (Traditional)
By Marcy Shaffer

THE DOLLAR AND ITS DIVING.
HAVE TORN CONVENTION DOWN.
OF ALL THE CURRENCIES IN THE WORLD,
THE DOLLAR'S WORN THE CROWN.
THE THRIVING OF THE YEN.
THE ARRIVING OF THE YUAN.
THAT SAID, WE BRED '08.
THAT LED THE GREAT DEFLATE.
THAT SPED A DREAD NEW DAY TO DAWN.

THE DOLLAR'S BEEN A HAVEN.
AS SAFE AS ANY VAULT.
BUT SINCE WE GAVE IN TO OUR CRAVIN',
THAT VAULT IS IN DEFAULT.
THE THRIVING OF THE YEN.
THE DRIVING OF THE YUAN.
QE2 MAY DATE
A ONCE TABOO DEBATE.
WITH THE U.S. OVERDRAWN.

THE DOLLAR'S BEEN THE STANDARD.
LIKE THE STERLING, AND LIKE GOLD.
BUT POLICIES PHILANDERED.
AS WE PANDERED UNCONTROLLED.
THE THRIVING OF THE YEN.
THE HIGH-FIVING OF THE YUAN.
WITH THE EURO STATE
AN UNSURE, OH, STATE.
WHERE HAVE ALL THE POWERS GONE?

THE DOLLAR'S LIKE A LINGO.
THAT EVERYBODY KNOWS.
BUT AS EACH POSE GROWS MORE JINGOISTIC.
THAT OPENING COULD CLOSE.
THE THRIVING OF THE YEN.
THE CONTRIVING OF THE YUAN.
FIRST TO COMPLICATE.
THEN TO STOMP-LICATE.
IF WE SWING FROM KING TO PAWN.

THE DOLLAR AND ITS DIVING.
HOW WILL THE STORY END?
THE MOST THE EXPERTS CONDESCEND TO SAY
IS THAT IT WILL JUST DEPEND.
ON THE THRIVING OF THE YEN.
THE CONNIVING OF THE YUAN.
CAN WE RE-BRETTONATE?
RE-SET THE DETONATE?
OR HAVE WE CROSSED THE RUBICON?

THE THRIVING OF THE YEN.
THE CONNIVING OF THE YUAN.
CAN WE RE-BRETTONATE?
RE-SET THE DETONATE?
OR HAVE WE CROSSED THE RUBICON?
HAVE WE CROSSED THE RUBICON?
HAVE WE CROSSED THE RUBICON?

VERSUS is co-produced by Russ Meyer, a private equity veteran whose industry expertise includes financial services as well as entertainment. Shaffer is an attorney-cum-parodist (Roll over Stephan Pastis!) and her partner, Russ Meyer, received his MBA from Stanford University. Shaffer writes the words and Meyer counts the beans.]

Will A TSA Screener Give You The Finger In This Holiday Season?

After 9/11, a theater of the absurd has overtaken U.S. airports. First, it was "remove your shoes." Now, it's going to be "drop your drawers and bend over." If this is (fair & balanced) mass-psychosis, so be it.
