And that was it, over and out. Now we know that the 'toonist's commentary will be minimal for each of the remaining weeks of August. As the Brits are wont to say, "The bloke is on holiday." No such luxury for a blogger who slavishly posts something (of varying quality) to this blog. No holidays for the weak (or stupid). In the meantime, we are left with a minimalist cartoon that evokes futility with Sparky the Wonder Penguin falling into a soliloquy with a stolid, Lumpen follower of the current occupant of the Oval Office who makes no response to Sparky until the final panel when the LumpenMAGA cap-wearer utters a single nonsensical response with which Sparky snarkily agrees. If this is a (fair & balanced) portrayal of the futility of political discourse in 2018, so be it.

[Dan Perkins is an editorial cartoonist better known by the pen name "Tom Tomorrow." His weekly comic strip, "This Modern World," which comments on current events from a strong liberal perspective, appears regularly in approximately 150 papers across the U.S., as well as on Daily Kos.
