Students and alumni at American University will enjoy a barbecue on the Washington, D.C., campus before heading to the National Mall for fireworks on the Fourth. James R. Heintze, a librarian at American who has been collecting facts on the Fourth for a decade, says many colleges have helped keep alive the Spirit of '76.

Colleges and universities have played a big part in our country's historical celebration of Independence Day, says Mr. Heintze, whose archive on the Fourth can be found online 4th of July Celebrations Mainly, they've helped keep it a meaningful day.
