Done Too Soon

Estaban, mi amigo del Norte, just sent me a CD ("Songbird" by Eva Cassidy) today. Eva Cassidy (1963-1996) sings standards like "Autumn Leaves" amd "Over The Rainbow" on this CD. The gift came from the guy who taught me (as a callow high school sophomore) about Thelonious Monk and Max Roach. Now, Estaban has taught me about Eva Cassidy. She was — in her brief life — the best singer nobody knew.

Of course, no elegaic blog entry should pass without noting the death of the keyboardist for The E Street Band: Danny Federici (January 23, 1950 — April 17, 2008). Federici made one of his last appearances with The Boss in performing "My Home Town" in the YouTube clip posted to this blog yesterday. If this is (fair & balanced) wonder at the uncertainties of life, so be it.
