Stranded In The Dubster's Rose Garden

Click on the title of this blog entry ("Stuck In The Dubster's Rose Garden") to go to the Versus site and hear the latest parody of the C&W anthem, "(I Never Promised You A) Rose Garden." What a price has been paid for sending a loon to the White House. The highest crime or misdemeanor in his case is gross incompetence. Impeach now! If this is (fair & balanced) impatience, so be it.

To "(I NEVER PROMISED YOU A) ROSE GARDEN"
(Words and Music by JOE SOUTH)

Parody Lyrics by Marcy Shaffer

I beg your pardon.
But when you landed in the Rose Garden.
The duty was awesome.
We resolutely rooted you'd blossom.
Once you win, you've got to grow.
To know you can't blow off every foe.
When you just send bombardin'.
You end up stranded
in the Rose Garden.

Well, we used to be slick
with the carrot and stick.
Whether cheered or merely feared:
we domineered the planet.
Oh, we totally ran it.
When a state was in vogue
that went skatin' to rogue?
It was great, oh, 'cause we had NATO
to be referred to.
Who you now give the bird to.

Good golly, the folly of your idea.
We shouldn't call up North Korea.
At this stage, it isn't sage to disengage.
One more canard in
How you grandstanded in the Rose Garden.
Old friends getting distant.
And soon quite possibly nonexistent.

What you're discardin'.
When you are stranded in the Rose Garden.

To Hezbollah's success
and Tehran's game of chess.
You just muster a bluster.
but, buster, that isn't the way to lead.
And it's error when it's terror you breed.
You're in so far over your head.
the alert should be red.
With the beast of the Middle East.
in the wind you're flappin'.
And it didn't have to happen.

Conceit so complete and so close-minded.
You can't compete when you are blinded
To the real realities of centuries.
The show you've starred in.
What you've commanded from the Rose Garden.
Alliances shaking.
And new defiances in the making.
Positions harden.
When you're high-handed in the Rose Garden.
Across every ocean.
Dear God, what forces have you set in motion?

I beg your pardon.
But we are stranded
in your Rose Garden.

[Marcy Shaffer is an attorney-cum-parodist who has succeeded Tom Lehrer with lyrics that are both clever and entertaining; Singer/songwriter Joe South (born Joe Souter) began his career as a country musician and worked in music studios in both Nashville and at Muscle Shoals. South began recording his own material in 1968, scoring a hit with the Grammy-winning "Games People Play" (Song of the Year) the following year. While South produced hits like "Don't It Make You Want to Go Home" and "Walk a Mile in My Shoes," Lynn Anderson had a smash country and pop hit in 1971 with South's "(I Never Promised You a) Rose Garden."]
