Today, A Political Humor Trifecta

Sarah Silverman, a standup comic who works blue, created a political ad in 2008 (aimed at Florida, a battleground state) and returns four years later with another poliitical ad with a geriatric theme. Please note that Silverman's bits are laced with obscenities. For milder humor, Calvin Trillin has written a poem about the 2012 election (below). If this is (fair & balanced) political humor, so be it.

A Rallying Cry From The Romney Camp
By Calvin Trillin

“Amid Discord, Romney Seeks to Sharpen Message
on His Agenda” —The New York Times

We’ve got to go now hell for leather.
We’ve got to get our act together,
’Cause even rightwing pundits say
That this campaign’s in disarray.
With our endeavor such a mess
We find it difficult to press
Our message that this country needs
A man who’s proven by his deeds
That he can turn a firm around,
That he is someone who’s renowned
For skills in management writ large.
But wait: that’s who we’ve got in charge. Ω

[Calvin Trillin began his career as a writer for Time magazine, and has been a staff writer for The New Yorker since 1963. For fifteen years Trillin wrote a series for The New Yorker called "U.S. Journal" — a 3,000-word article from somewhere in the United States, every three weeks. Since 1984, he has penned a series of longer narrative pieces under the heading "American Chronicles." He later became a columnist for The Nation, writing what USA Today called "simply the funniest regular column in journalism." That column became syndicated from 1986 through 1995. From the July 2, 1990, issue of The Nation to today, Trillin has written his weekly "Deadline Poet" column – humorous poems about current events. Trillin has written considerably more pieces for The Nation than any other single person. A native of Kansas City, MO, Trillin received his BA, from Yale College in 1957. He served in the army, and then joined Time.]
