The NSA (National Security Agency) is directed by General (4 stars) Keith B. Alexander. Probably, Alexander's most notable predecessor in NSA ranks was Admiral John Poindexter during the reign of St. Dutch. Poindexter was convicted in 1990 of five counts of lying to Congress and obstructing the Congressional investigation into the Reagan Administration's covert arms sales to Iran and the diversion of proceeds to insurgents fighting the Marxist Government in Nicaragua, later known as the Iran–Contra affair. Poindexter's convictions were reversed in 1991 on appeal. In this blogger's fading memory, Poindexter was promoting a domestic spying program in the 1990s. Now, the NSA has become the handmaiden to the National Security State. Wiretaps and data-mining: full speed ahead under General Alexander. "We have met the enemy and he is us," Pogo Possum said during the 1970 celebration of Earth Day and Tom Tomorrow updates the wise possum-philosopher and expands the aphorism to domestic spying. If this is (fair & balanced) perversion of national security, so be it.

[Dan Perkins is an editorial cartoonist better known by the pen name "Tom Tomorrow". His weekly comic strip, "This Modern World," which comments on current events from a strong liberal perspective, appears regularly in approximately 150 papers across the U.S., as well as on Daily Kos. The strip debuted in 1990 in SF Weekly. Perkins, a long time resident of Brooklyn, New York, currently lives in Connecticut. He received the Robert F. Kennedy Award for Excellence in Journalism in both 1998 and 2002. When he is not working on projects related to his comic strip, Perkins writes a daily political weblog, also entitled "This Modern World," which he began in December 2001.
