Chuckles the (pragmatic, moderate, centrist) Sensible Woodchuck made his debut in "This Modern World" in 2010 and Tom Tomorrow often pairs the Woodchuck with Sparky the Wonder Penguin. Spark's first words in the strip were "George [H. W.] Bush is a wanker" and that marks his debut in the 'toon in the late 1980s. Sparky is never without his Inuit-style goggles that ward off "bull$hit blindness" in lieu of snow and ice. Today, Chuckles and Sparky are engaged in a colloquy that echoes George Packer's interior monologue about Syria last week. Note that Chuckles is reading the NY Fishwrap (Times) while engaging in wordplay with Sparky. The Editorial Board of The Times called for military action against the Assad regime. However, the colloquy ends with no real resolution. If this is a (fair & balanced) equivalent of "Hell in a very small place," so be it.

[Dan Perkins is an editorial cartoonist better known by the pen name "Tom Tomorrow". His weekly comic strip, "This Modern World," which comments on current events from a strong liberal perspective, appears regularly in approximately 150 papers across the U.S., as well as on Daily Kos. The strip debuted in 1990 in SF Weekly. Perkins, a long time resident of Brooklyn, New York, currently lives in Connecticut. He received the Robert F. Kennedy Award for Excellence in Journalism in both 1998 and 2002. When he is not working on projects related to his comic strip, Perkins writes a daily political weblog, also entitled "This Modern World," which he began in December 2001.
