In the midst of the $shitstorm that we call daily life in the third decade of the 21st century, Tom/Dan draws two representatives of the faithful who seem to be feeling the discomfort of voter-remorse. In the final panel, the two $hitheads (followers of the $hithead-in-Chief) take comfort in the bottom-line: a tax-cut windfall for the 1%. In addition, Tom/Dan broke radio silence in the message accompanying today's 'toon:
So, a bit of a personal update … I’ve moved into my new place in New York, unpacked, and finally managed to get back to work. Two months ago, my wife dropped the divorce bomb on me (as well as revealing some incomprehensibly hurtful things she’d done over the past year, to which I had been entirely oblivious). Somehow I made it through the liminal space of the last two months of a collapsing marriage, made it numbly through the holidays, but it has been the hardest two months of my life, and I’ve seen some pretty hard moments. But as they say, the only way forward is through, and I’m fortunate to have a lot of friends in NYC, as well as a good shrink back in New Haven (with whom I am still skyping), and have been making every effort to get out of the apartment most evenings and be with people. It feels like my life got hit by an earthquake, but when the earthquake hits you can either sit in the wreckage cursing fate, or get up and try to rebuild. I’m working on the latter, trying to reinvent my life. I didn’t ask for any of this, and the sadness feels like something permanently fused with my soul at the moment, but in my better moments I can see that there’s a world of possibility out there. This is probably not the finest cartoon I have ever written, but under the circumstances, it feels like a small miracle to have written anything at all. Everyone assures me there is light at the end of the tunnel yet, and with the help of my friends I think I will eventually find it. In the meantime, thanks to all of you who support my work through this list, as well as those of you who’ve signed on lately. It really means the world.
Dan/Tom
If this is a (fair & balanced) conclusion to a pretty miserable week, so be it.
