"Officer Friendly" a minor and infrequent member of the cast of This Modern World has undergone significant change in our dismal times. In 2011, Officer Friendly spoke darkly with two neighbor children about policing protests. Now, in 2018, Office Friendly has morphed into ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) Agent Friendly and his conversation with the two inquisitive neighbor kids takes an even darker tone. And, with today's 'toon, Tom/Dan added:
Some of you may remember Officer Friendly — the sinister cop who made several appearances during Occupy, and later during Ferguson. I’ve been wanting to re-introduce him as an ICE officer for awhile now. Of course, the late-breaking story of the week was “the Memo,” but it kind of turned out to be a nothingburger, and I’d already done last week’s cartoon on the FBI, which turned out to be extremely well-timed. Sometimes you get lucky like that.
Oh, also many thanks to everyone who noticed the typos in last week's toon. You guys are my early warning system!
Until next week…
Dan/Tom
That would seem to be the final word, except that ICE Director Thomas Homan offered an even more sinister warning to undocumented immigrants: "Be very afraid." If this is (fair & balanced) authoritarianism, so be it.
