Roll Over, Hamlet — We Have Another Prime Example Of "Hoist With His Own Petard" On October 2, 2020

Earlier this AM (10/2/2020), this blogger awoke to breaking news that The *ILK (*Impeached But Not Removed) Lyin' King, his wife, and several staffers had tested positive for COVID-19. This blogger wrestled with the issue of good taste with today's post and in a paraphase of The *ILK's own words: "He is what he is" and his wife and staffers "knew what they were getting into." Today, this blog is an unhypocritical empathy-free zone. Again, to paraphrase Hamlet: "To Mask Or Not To Mask," was his choice. Unlike The *ILK's unprotected gaze at the sun during a solar eclipse, the refusal to wear a mask and maintain a safe social distance has left The *ILK undone with the election of 2020 a month away. If this is a (fair & balanced) profession of thoughts and compassionate wishes for the more than 200,000 men, women, and children who have died in the United States because of The *ILK's maladministration from the day he took office in 2017, and in the present day when there are no such wishes for The *ILK, so be it.

"America Wrote the Pandemic Playbook, Then Ignored It"
By Johnny Harris, Nicholas Kristof and Adam B. Ellick

A year ago, the United States was regarded as the country best prepared for a pandemic. Our government had spent nearly two decades strategizing for a doomsday scenario. So what went wrong?

How is it that America, which wrote the global playbook for pandemic response, accounts for just 4 percent of the world’s population yet more than 20 percent of the world’s coronavirus deaths?

One of the most important functions of journalism is to provide accountability, so in the video above, we dive deep into an exploration of what went wrong and when, and who’s to blame and why. ###

[Johnny Harris (on-camera host for this video) is a filmmaker and journalist who is based in Washington, DC where he makes videos for Vox.com, reporting on interesting trends and stories domestically and around the globe. His visual style blends motion graphics with cinematic videography to create content that explains complex issues in relatable ways. Harris received a BA (international relations from Brigham Young University (UT) and an MA (international peace and conflict resolution) from American University (DC).

[Nicholas D. Kristof writes op-ed columns that appear twice each week in The New York Times. A two-time Pulitzer Prize winner, he previously was associate managing editor of The Times, responsible for the Sunday Times. Kristof received a BA (government, Phi Beta Kappa) from Harvard College (MA) and then received a BA (law) from Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar. In 1990 Kristof and his wife, Sheryl WuDunn, also a Times journalist, won a Pulitzer Prize for their coverage of China's Tiananmen Square democracy movement. They were the first married couple to win a Pulitzer for journalism. Mr. Kristof won a second Pulitzer in 2006, for commentary for what the judges called "his graphic, deeply reported columns that, at personal risk, focused attention on genocide in Darfur and that gave voice to the voiceless in other parts of the world." Kristof's most recent book (with wife and co-author, Sheryl WuDunn) is Tightrope: Americans Reaching for Hope (2020). See other books by Nicholas Kristof here.

Adam Ellick is the executive producer of Opinion Video for the NY Fishwrap. In 2011, he was part of the team that won a Pulitzer Prize for the "best use of video category" for his coverage inside the everyday lives of Pakistanis for the NY Fishwrap. Ellick was a Fullbright Scholar (2003-2005) in Indonesia. He received a BA with honors (journalism) from Ithaca College (NY) and an MPA (international relations and affairs) from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University (MA).]
